Abstract Submittal

Guidelines for submittal of papers and posters for accepted abstracts are below. Please contact us with questions.

  • All participants must register for the Conference. Each participant is responsible for his or her expenses and registration fees for the conference.
  • Submit papers as a Word attachment to unescouc@uci.edu.

    Paper and Poster Guidelines

    Deadline: October 17, 2008

    Proofread your submission carefully—it will be printed in the program exactly as received. Late or incorrect manuscripts will not be accepted and your presentation will be removed from the program.

    FORMAT INSTRUCTIONS

    Paper Size and Orientation: 8.5” x 11” portrait orientation

    Length: 20 pages maximum

    Spacing: Single space within paragraphs, double space between paragraphs. Do not indent paragraphs. Left justify text with no indentations.

    Margins: 1 inch margins on all sides (top, bottom, left and right)

    Font: Times New Roman, 12 point

    Electronic File Format: Microsoft Word 97-2003 compatible

    Graphics:

    • Graphics must be embedded
    • Color or black and white are acceptable
    • Must fit on paper size 8.5 x11; portrait or landscape orientation is acceptable
    • Include headings for figures under the figure; headings for tables above the table
    • Photographs of people should not be used without permission

    Equations:

      • Equations should remain in the body of the text, format as a separate paragraph
      • Equations and formulas should be numbered separately and sequentially throughout the text
      • All variables and special symbols, such as Greek letters, must be clearly identified and explained, and units of measurement provided

    Units of expression:

      • Supply all data in the text, figures and tables in metric notation and International System of Units (SI) nomenclature
      • If desired, show English/conventional units in parentheses following the metric quantities

    Acronyms and Terminology:

      • Use common acronyms to abbreviate long expressions
      • Spell out acronyms on the first occurrence

    In-Text Citations:

      • All data and information should be properly referenced
      • Cited references in the narrative, graphics and tables should consist of either the author(s) and year of publication only or the year of publication, depending on the narrative context.
      • If the same author(s) is cited in more than one publication in the same year, lower-case letters (a, b, c, etc.) are appended to the year in the first and succeeding citations.
      • Periodical titles are to be abbreviated in accordance with the CAplus system (http://www.cas.org/sent.html)
      • Examples:

    “There are several alternatives (Jones and Smith, 1992a) for handling these wastes.”

    “Jones and Smith (1992b) have documented the source of these wastes.”

     

    CONTENT INSTRUCTIONS

    Title:

      • Title should use bold, 16 point type, aligned to the left
      • Refrain from using colons, question marks, or other unnecessary punctuation
      • Limit to 135 characters
      • Do not include the name of the conference, location of conference, conference dates and session/number in your paper

    Author Affiliation:

      • List all authors (full name) and their affiliations (institution or company name only) using numerical superscripts
      • Identify the corresponding author by an asterisk
      • Provide an email address for the corresponding author

    Headings and Subheadings:

      • Headings should be aligned left, bold, 12 point, all capital letters (HEADING)
      • Subheadings should be aligned left, bold, 12 point, upper and lower case (Subheading)

    Abstract:

      • Should be a concise, factual summary of the paper including objectives, methods, results and conclusions
      • Limit 200 words
      • Do not include graphics in the abstract session

    Keywords:

      • Keywords are required and should identify the main points of the paper
      • Maximum 10 words/phrases; list in order of importance and separate by commas

    Introduction:

      • Introduce the topic and outline problems
      • Place your work in the context of other work done in the field, referencing pertinent research and background

    Methodology:

      • Include all information that is necessary for replication of the work
      • Include source of materials, experimental conditions, and detail descriptions of any new techniques
      • Include the vendor (or supplier) and its location for all products and equipment
      • Identify computer software by name and location of the developer, and the version number

    Results:

    • Highlight key outcomes
    • Organize and present data; be sure to acknowledge and attribute all data properly

    Discussion:

    • Place results in the proper context, being sure to cover the points you said you would in the introduction
    • Elaborate on any important and/or unexpected outcomes

    Conclusions:

      • Tie up key points
      • Discuss possibilities for further research or work

    References:

      • References should be included at the end of the manuscript
      • Basic format is as follows:
        • Alphabetize the list by the last name of the first author cited
        • Order the items in each reference as: author(s); year of publication: title of work: periodical, publisher, conference, etc.; volume number, issue number, and initial and final page numbers
        • Begin each reference on the left margin and indent subsequent lines by ½ inch

    POSTER INSTRUCTIONS

    If you have been selected for a poster presentation, you may choose to either submit a full paper using the guidelines above or submit the powerpoint slides used to create your poster. Powerpoint slides should be submitted using the same font and size guidelines for papers.

    Posters dimensions must be within 36 inches high x 48- 60 inches wide.
